An oversize cargo is an object that exceeds the Russian normal standards: its weight (including the weight of a means of transport) exceeds 38 tons and the dimensions are larger than the dimensions of the road train (20x4x2.55 meters – the standard dimensions of a container for a streamlined semitrailer). To put it simply, oversize cargo is the cargo that doesn’t fit into majority of transport means.

Special aspects of oversize cargo transportation

  • To transport oversize cargo, specialized transport means are used: streamlined semitrailers with a capacity starting from 38 tons, modular trains, low and extensible platforms, etc.
  • For different means of transport the definition of “oversize” cargo will be different as well. For example, for sea transportation standard sizes are lower than standard sizes for trucking.
  • International rules of cargo transportation and driving regulations, there are special requirements for oversize cargo transportation: the transported goods shouldn’t obstruct the driver’s view and control, affect vehicle stability, make noise and raise dust during transportation.
  • Since July 1, 2014, trucking of oversized cargo must be escorted by pilot cars (in front and sometimes behind the road train) with LED displays installed on the roofs.
